The Seven Major Chakras: A Complete Guide to Balance and Healing
Jan 18, 2026
Why is chakra balance important?
When chakras are functioning at their optimum, they bring a vibrant flow of energy into the body's systems on all levels of being. We feel grounded, creative, confident and communicate easily. We can flow with life, feel emotionally stable, connect with our intuition and with Universal wisdom. We can achieve a sense of overall wellbeing.
When chakras are out of balance, we feel ungrounded, blocked, unsure of ourselves and unable to speak our truth. We can feel emotionally "all over the place" and as if we can't connect to our spirituality or the wider Universe. We can feel very isolated and as if "something isn't right"
I frequently see that an animal or person who has an imbalance in their chakra system, struggles with day to day life and are often feeling anxious, lacking in confidence or are having issues with their health. Because of this, chakra balancing and healing form an important foundation in the Transformational Bodywork and Reiki healing that I offer.
Chakra imbalance and relationships
One of the things that I notice is that when an animal and/or their guardian have an imbalance in their chakras, this can impact on the relationship they have with each other. Sometimes they mirror each other. For example, if an animal has a damaged sacral chakra they may feel very insecure. If the animal's guardian also has a sacral chakra that is out of balance, this can create additional anxiety for their animal. The guardian will feel their animal's anxiety and it can amplify their own anxiety, leading to a cycle of anxious behaviours in the relationship. Once healing occurs for either or both of them, they can start to connect on a more secure foundation.
What are the major chakras?
I start by focusing on the seven major chakras and ensuring that these are aligned with each other and all operating in perfect harmony and flow. Each chakra receives healing to ensure that it's working for the highest good of the individual.
Base chakra
This is situated at the base of the spine and is the root of vitality in the body. It often appears as red in colour. This is the chakra that ensures we can ground and feel stable in ourselves. If this chakra is out of balance, it can be seen in low energy levels, a sense of being ungrounded and difficulties in coping with day to day stress. Animals who are restless, anxious and who have trouble concentrating are often in need of help in healing this chakra.
Sacral chakra
This is housed just below the belly button and is the energy centre that helps us to feel safe, secure, playful, creative and it also governs our reproductive systems. It appears as orange light. If this chakra is in need of healing, it often manifests as anxiety, restlessness, fear, feeling blocked and issues in relationships. In my experience, this chakra is nearly always in need of support when an animal suffers with anxiety.
Solar Plexus chakra
This sits at the top of the ribcage and it's where we experience our sense of identity, personality, confidence and empowerment. It's a gorgeous sunny yellow in colour. When there is an imbalance in this chakra it often leads to a lack of confidence and self-worth, feeling unsure and a sense of loss of identity and purpose. The solar plexus chakra is often in need of help when an animal displays aggressive or fearful behaviours.
Heart chakra
This is in the centre of the chest and illuminates the body in pink light. It's a beautiful and tender chakra connected to love. If this chakra is blocked it can affect how we love ourselves and others and how we experience and share love. It affects all of our relationships and how we give and receive love. The heart chakra can be impacted by change and stress and animals who have been rehomed, traumatised or have lost trust often benefit from healing for this chakra.
Throat chakra
This is a turquoise energy centre at the base of the throat. When this is out of balance it can manifest as over vocalisation (e.g. excessive barking in dogs) or shut down communication (I often see this in traumatised or rescue animals), as well as difficulties in communicating and being understood.
Third eye chakra
This sits in the middle of the forehead and is the energy centre that connects us to our intuition and knowing. It's blue in colour. When this is blocked or low in energy it can lead to mental strain, where we feel too much in our own heads, a lack of trust in ourselves and reliance on others to make decisions. In animals I often see this is out of balance if they are constantly "on", looking for mischief, overthinking things (e.g. hyper vigilance about walking down a certain path), not thinking about things (e.g. reckless behaviour) and not trusting themselves. It can show up as very flighty and unpredictable behaviour as well as issues around seeing clearly.
Crown chakra
This is situated on the top of the head and is a rich purple. It's the chakra that helps us to connect to our guides, to angels, to helpful support that is coming from the Universe. When this chakra is out of balance it can manifest in animals as a dislike of being touched on the head (e.g. a horse that is head shy or a dog that ducks away from being touched). It's a very sensitive energy centre that needs careful tuning. It's a chakra that can be easily damaged, because heads can get bumped from an early age. I often see an imbalance in this chakra show up as frustration, angry outbursts, trouble with the ears and hearing and a sense of being disconnected from the world.
