Step Outside. Feel the Earth.
Apr 25, 2026
Spring is here and with it comes an open invitation from the natural world, one that your animals have understood all along. There is something wonderful about simply stepping outside, feeling the ground beneath your feet and letting nature do what it has always done so beautifully: bring us back to ourselves.
In this blog, I want to explore the gentle practice of grounding and how spending time in nature can calm a dysregulated nervous system, for both you and the animals in your life.
What is grounding?
Grounding is the practice of making direct physical contact with the earth with bare feet on grass, soil, sand or rock. It helps our bodies shift from a stressed fight-or-flight state into a calmer mode that so many of us and our animals are desperately seeking.
Your animals already know this
Our animals are extraordinary mirrors. When we are anxious, tight or overwhelmed, they feel it. When we are settled, rooted and present, they feel that too. Going outside together by walking slowly, pausing to notice and allowing natural curiosity is one of the most healing things we can offer our animal companions.
You don't need a forest or a meadow. Even a small patch of garden, a quiet park or a walk to the letterbox counts. The key is presence, leaving the phone behind, softening your gaze and allowing your senses to arrive fully in the moment.
A simple grounding practice to try today
- Find your patch of earth. Choose a patch of grass, soil or sand and remove your shoes. Let your feet feel the texture beneath them.
- Breathe and soften. Take three slow, deep breaths. Let your shoulders drop. There is nowhere you need to be right now.
- Arrive with your senses. Notice what you can hear, smell and feel. The temperature of the air, the sounds around you, the solidity of the ground underfoot. Simply be there, without an agenda.
- Invite your animal to join you. On their own terms. Watch what they choose to do, where they sniff, where they settle and what draws their attention. Let their instincts guide the experience.
Let your animal be your teacher
Your animal is already a master of this practice. They roll in grass, press their noses to soil and lie in patches of sunlight with complete and utter devotion to the present moment. They don't scroll, overthink or rush. They simply are.
Perhaps this is the greatest gift they offer us, not just companionship but a living, breathing reminder of how to come home to ourselves.
This week, let them lead the way. Step outside together. Feel the earth. And notice what shifts.
